Anthropic Launched a Healthcare Product. Salesforce and Workday Dropped. Here's What Actually Happened.

Anthropic launched Claude for Healthcare. Salesforce and Workday stock dropped.

Most coverage described this as "competitive pressure." That framing misses what actually happened.

Claude for Healthcare does not need to replace Salesforce Health Cloud to destroy its valuation premium. It just needs to make the "domain expertise moat" feel optional.

Here's what most people are missing:

• The vertical SaaS moat was never about features. It was about switching costs reinforced by the assumption that deep domain expertise takes years to build. Anthropic shipped HIPAA compliance and clinical trial agents without acquiring a healthcare company or hiring 500 domain experts. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health the same week. Both companies compressed "years of domain expertise" into a training run.

• RBC Capital Markets said explicitly that vertical AI "challenges assumptions about domain expertise moats." That is an analyst at a major bank telling enterprise software investors that the thesis they used to justify their valuations may not hold. That is the real news. The stock drop was the market processing that sentence.

• The competition is not product-to-product. Claude for Healthcare does not need to win a feature comparison against Veeva or Salesforce Health Cloud. It needs to make enterprise buyers question whether "domain expertise" commands a premium anymore. That question alone reprices the sector.

The SaaS companies that will survive this are the ones with genuine workflow lock-in — data integrations, compliance processes, organizational habits that are painful to change. The ones that will struggle are the ones whose primary value proposition was "we understand your industry better than a general-purpose tool."

That advantage has an expiration date that is arriving faster than anyone modeled.

The healthcare launch is not the story. Every vertical is the story.
